This unit of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary-Pacific was formed in the winter of 2003 to promote boasting safety on the Shuswap Lake. Our initial group of members spent two days on a course being instructed on how to perform "Courtesy Checks" and a further two day course on First Aid. Courtesy Checks
In our first year of operation "Courtesy Checks" at various
launching points and marinas throughout the lake where completed by our members
What is a Courtesy Check?
A Courtesy Check is a Free Service provided by the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary to assist the owner/operator of a small craft (up to 65'/20 m), in maintaining their vessel's safety equipment at standards acceptable to the marine environment.
Courtesy Checks are free of charge!
A trained Courtesy Examiner (CE) from the Coast Guard Auxiliary will board the vessel, with the owners consent, and conduct a thorough check of all the safety and navigation equipment required to be carried on board according to the Canada Shipping and the Small Vessel Regulations. This check includes making sure the equipment is present and in good working conditions.
Some of the mandatory safety items checked include:
Personal Flotation Devices
Bailer
Flash Light with batteries
Navigation Lights
Fire Extinguishers
A check of optional and navigation
equipment will be carried out as well.
Some of the optional safety and navigational items checked include:
VHF Radio
First Aid Kit
Radar and GPS
Tools and Spares
A decal will be issued on successful completion
Courtesy Checks normally take about 15-30 minutes for a small vessel and up to 1 hour for a large vessel depending on the amount and the condition of the equipment on board, and the interest of the owner.
The objective of the Pleasure Craft Courtesy Check Program is to advise and further the safety and enjoyment for all those who boat. All the while doing so in an atmosphere of co-operation.
Courtesy Checks are not mandatory or required by law.
The carriage of the prescribed safety equipment is mandatory and required by law

"Kids Don't
Float" Station
In July 2004 we installed a "Kids Don't
Float" Station along side one of the launching ramps in Sicamous.
This station loans (free of charge) Personal Flotation Devices in kids sizes to
the boating public who take kids out boating and do not have
PFDs in kids sizes on board. They should be returned after
their trip.
